Doctor Lin Russell picked up her two daughters Josie aged nine and Megan, six from school on Tuesday 9th July 1996 after their swimming gala. It was a lovely day for a walk home and the family had their pet dog Lucy with them. About twenty minutes in, they reached a narrow track named Cherry Garden Lane which is near to the small village of Chillenden, near Canterbury in Kent, England.

A car drove past them, and Josie waved at the driver. As they got further down the track that same car was blocking their way. A man got out of the vehicle. He was brandishing a hammer. He demanded money from Lin, but she had left her purse at home and wasn't carrying any cash.
Lin told Josie to run for help, but the man grabbed her and hit her over the head with the hammer. He then marched the family into the nearby trees and tied them up using strips of Josie's swimming towel, a pair of tights and a bootlace.

He then launched into a sickening attack, savagely bludgeoning the three victims. Lin was struck at least 15 times with the hammer, she and Megan both died from their massive injuries along with Lucy the dog. Remarkably Josie survived the attack and was still alive albeit with a very weak pulse when a search party found the three bodies. Josie was rushed to hospital in London, where, after extensive surgery, miraculously she pulled through and was able to give a description of the monster who had attacked them.
A man named Michael Stone was arrested a year later and found guilty of the murders at trial and again in a re-trial. He continues to protest his innocence. The notorious serial killer Levi Bellfield has also been linked to the crimes.
