The Horror of Jayne Mansfield's Car Crash...

The actor Jayne Mansfield was known for her "blonde bombshell" image. She rose to stardom in the 1950s and took Hollywood by storm in films such as The Girl Can't Help It and Too Hot To Handle. Jayne was travelling to an engagement at a nightclub in New Orleans with her driver, her lawyer and close friend, and three of her five children. At about 2.30am the 1966 Buick Electra that they were riding in crashed into the rear of a tractor trailer at high speed. The three adults in the front seat died instantly but the three children in the back miraculously escaped the crash with minor injuries. The youngest child Mariska went on to become an actor herself and has starred as Olivia Benson for over twenty years, in the hit TV show Law and Order SUV. The photograph shows the sheer devastation of the impact and the damage caused to the car which had its roof sheered straight off.
