The Haunting Photograph Of A Trapped 13-Year-Old Girl...

In 1985 the Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted in Amero, Colombia. Volcanic debris mixed with ice and formed massive mudslides which poured into the river valleys below the mountain. More than 25,000 people died and 13 villages were demolished, including Amero. After a mudflow demolished her home the 13-year-old Omayra was trapped beneath debris in water for three days. During her ordeal volunteers spent time trying to comfort Omayra. She sang, cried and prayed but began to hallucinate as she reached the end of her life, her eyes reddened, and her hands turned white. Despite the efforts of relief workers, who spent 60 hours trying to free Omayra she died, either as a result of hypothermia or gangrene. This photograph was taken just before Omayra's death and highlighted the failure of the Colombian government to plan for natural disasters.
