Sad Photograph Taken Moments Before Disaster...

This Pulitzer Prize winning photograph was taken in 1976 by Stanley Forman. He worked for the Boston Herald and was called out to a fire at a row of Victorian buildings. On arrival at the scene Forman followed fire trucks around the back of the building and saw that people were trapped up on the fire escape. Diane Bryant 19 and her two-year-old goddaughter Tiare Jones were just two of the people waiting for firefighters to reach them. A firefighter named Bob O'Neill lowered himself onto the fire escape from the roof. The ladder was raised but just as Diane was going to climb to safety and hand Bob the baby the fire escape collapsed. Unfortunately Diane died from her injuries, but miraculously little Tiare fell on top of Diane's body and survived. The firefighter was able to grab the ladder and cling on before hoisting himself back up to safety. Forman took a series of images that day but it is this one that was used on fire safety campaigns and paved the way for a new law, making property owners responsible for fire escape safety.
