Alone, in the dark, off the trail; that’s the situation Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon are generally believed to have been in when they met their fate in the Panamanian wilderness back in April of 2014. The official explanation is that they got lost after going beyond the marked route, known as the Pianista, and tragically couldn't find their way back to civilization. But what if that isn’t what happened? What if the truth was far more sinister?

Over the last several months, we’ve conducted an investigation into the disappearance of “The Lost Dutch Girls” as they are so frequently referred to in online discussions. In Part I, we explored the early reporting on their last days in the mountain town of Boquete, Panama, and how a story which should have been put to rest over a decade ago has continued to live on through social media, books, and podcast-based journalism. In Part II, we examined the claims of the people who were supposed to be looking out for them and discussed the problems that arose from their contradictory narratives. In Part III, we turned to the inconsistent statements from witnesses who claimed to have seen them on the day of their disappearance, only for Part IV to prove that every single one of them was in conflict with the digital evidence trail left behind on their devices; a digital trail which also all but proved that the girls were not simply lost out in the forest. Most recently, in Part V, we went over the most prominent foul play theories in the case, only to discover that certain aspects of the story just didn’t quite work. Now, at long last, we come to the end of the road: Part VI.
