CCTV Footage Show Man Trapped in an Elevator for 41 Hours...

At around 11pm on a Friday night in October 1999 Nicholas White left his office on the forty-third floor of the McGraw-Hill Building in New York where he worked as a production manager for Business Week, and went for a cigarette break. He told a colleague he'd be right back. Little did he know that in the next 20 minutes his life would change forever. When he finished his cigarette, he returned to the lobby and got into an elevator and pressed the button marked 43. The express elevator rapidly ascended as it usually did. However after just a few seconds it jolted to a halt, the lights flashed and the elevator stopped. Nick waited a moment, expecting a voice to offer information or instructions on how to get the elevator going again but none came. He pressed all the buttons hoping for a response and the alarm sounded. He felt sure at this point someone would rescue him, so remained calm.

However as time passed he started to hallucinate and began to contemplate death; imagining being found days later starved to death. He managed to pry open the door only to be faced with a brick wall. He called out for help but no one heard him, he used the open door to urinate in the hope someone would notice but no one did, and all the while the alarm rang continuously. Nick drifted in and out of sleep, and even tried to get through the escape hatch but it was locked. After 41 hours Nick was finally rescued, but the publicity and his decision to sue the building management, led to him losing everything he had built up prior to getting in that lift. He lost his home, his job and contact with his friends. The settlement figure he eventually got was nowhere near the twenty-five million dollars he was looking for and he has struggled to find work ever since.
