Why Are Young Asian People Dying in Their Sleep!?

In July 1983 the Los Angeles Times printed an article titled, 'Night Deaths of Asian Men Explained'. The piece claimed that young and healthy Japanese men and women were dying suddenly, in their sleep, every year. There had also been similar deaths among Filipino's and South East Asian refugees living in the US. The Japanese called the mysterious disease pokkuri which can be translated to mean that death occurs suddenly with a 'snap'. None of the victims, who were mostly men suffered from heart disease. In 1980 there were 80 of these deaths just in Tokyo alone and 76 of them were men. It was estimated that between 500 and 1,000 were dying from pokkuri in an average year. It was named 'nocturnal death syndrome' by two American researchers who said it was a 'baffling phenomenon'. In the Philippines the deaths are said to be caused by a disease called bangungut. The men there are thought to die during or just after a nightmare.
