*WARNING* The Devastating Effects of a Human Stampede...

On 24 July 2010, crowds gathered excitedly for the Love Parade electronic dance music festival in Duisburg, Germany. For some reason, admission to the festival was delayed by an hour, causing a long queue of partygoers to converge at the entrance. This was made worse as the only way in and out of the venue was through a 240-metre-long tunnel.

In an effort to relieve overcrowding, police began instructing new arrivals by loudspeaker to turn back. However, people continued pushing on into the confined space of the tunnel…with catastrophic consequences.

Those near the end of the tunnel started getting crushed, and with nowhere to go, 21 people died from suffocation due to crush injuries. Another 500 were injured, and many more suffered devastating psychological trauma.

After lengthy investigations and a criminal trial, proceedings were discontinued and no one was ever prosecuted for the failings that led to the tragedy.

This haunting mural in the Karl-Lehr-Strasse tunnel depicts the 21 young people who lost their lives that day… We don't know about you, but this seems a chilling, almost ghost-like reminder of how those young people died.
