Did the Soviet Union ever experience a mysterious “zombie outbreak”? Stories of strange experiments, secret laboratories, biological weapons and people supposedly transformed into violent, zombie-like figures have circulated for decades, creating one of the darkest legends associated with the USSR. But where did these stories actually come from? Were they based on real Soviet biological research, Cold War rumors, classified experiments, or later internet mythology? The Soviet Union did operate a secret biological weapons program, making the historical background undeniably disturbing. Yet there is no credible evidence that Soviet scientists created actual zombies or caused a genuine zombie outbreak. So what is fact, what is documented history, and what may have been exaggerated over time? Could real biological research have inspired one of the strangest Cold War legends ever told? This investigation explores the Soviet biological weapons program, alleged zombie experiments, Cold War secrecy, and the origins of the USSR zombie outbreak story. The deeper we go into the archives, the harder it becomes to separate documented history from the myths created around it.
