This is Dorothea Quarry. At first glance, it looks like a fairly ordinary lake surrounded by the beautiful Welsh countryside. But this beauty is deceptive. This unassuming lake is actually the flooded remains of an enormous slate quarry. Beneath the surface, it plunges more than 100 metres or over 300 ft, making it the deepest body of water in the country. And that depth is only part of what’s down there. The quarry is filled with old tunnels, cables, machinery, and abandoned workings left behind from when it flooded. All of this has made it incredibly appealing to divers, but also incredibly dangerous. Over the years, this has led to horrifying incidents. As always, viewer discretion is strongly advised.
