The Most Dangerous Ocean Crossing on Earth

This is Cape Horn. It is the southernmost tip of South America, but also the northernmost edge of the infamous Drake Passage. But while the Drake Passage spans hundreds of miles between South America and Antarctica, most ships travelling between the Atlantic and Pacific had little reason to venture far into it. Their real challenge was to round this point.

As a result, this is where centuries of maritime traffic became concentrated. Hundreds of ships have been lost throughout the broader Cape Horn region. And unlike many of the vessels that disappeared farther south, some left behind detailed accounts of crews fighting storms for months, ships vanishing without explanation, and survivors stranded among the islands at the end of the world. So, in this video, we’re going to look at why rounding Cape Horn was so dangerous, the harrowing incidents that gave it and even the broader Drake Passage its reputation, and why sailors continue to fear it to this day.
