If you were online at all in 2013, you saw this video: a young woman wearing a red hooded sweatshirt is moving in and out of an elevator, at times seeming to hide from someone, pressing rows and rows of elevator buttons, and making spidery, floating hand motions to… no one. People devoured the footage, scrubbing through it second-by-second in an attempt to wring anything meaningful from the silent recording. The woman was 21-year-old Elisa Lam, a Canadian tourist visiting Los Angeles whose family reported her missing mere hours after this security footage was captured. And while investigators would soon learn the horrifying truth – that Elisa had never left the hotel – that was just the beginning, because in addition to the basics of the case, the story of Elisa Lam contains an alarming number of bizarre coincidences, all against the backdrop of a decrepit hotel that was, itself, already a nightmare. And when Elisa’s body was discovered floating in that hotel’s water tank, an internet legend was born. Welcome back to The Lore Lodge...
