Cellphones’ ability to connect us to almost anyone, almost anywhere, has brought with it a number of incidents where someone was on the phone while a crime happened to them, with the other party hearing it all take place in real time; and while this phenomenon feels exclusive to the digital era, where we can go almost anywhere and remain in contact in real time, it actually isn’t: back in 1991, a woman talking to her fiance on a payphone would be abducted, with her fiance hearing it all happen on the other end. This boyfriend would hear her scream for him, not once that night, but twice, in a case that is profoundly frustrating because it was so close to being stopped.
