The James Webb Space Telescope has found something that doesn't fit our current picture of the early universe. A supermassive black hole appears to have formed long before it should have and it may have grown before its own galaxy was fully built. If astronomers are right, some of our biggest ideas about how galaxies and black holes formed may need to be rewritten.
