Why Scientists Want 10,000 Poop Samples by 2029

Deep in the Swiss Alps, researchers are building a literal "doomsday poop vault" modeled after the famous Svalbard Seed Vault, but this one is strictly designed to safeguard humanity's rapidly vanishing gut bacteria. The Microbiota Vault has an incredibly ambitious and slightly gross mission: to physically collect and deep-freeze 10,000 human stool samples from around the globe by the year 2029. Scientists are desperately racing against the clock because modern processed diets, industrial agriculture, and the heavy use of antibiotics are actively wiping out the crucial microbial diversity our bodies need for basic digestion and immunity. By preserving these pristine microbes now at a staggering -112°F, medical experts hope to eventually reverse-engineer them to cure the alarming modern rise in chronic autoimmune and metabolic diseases.
