This Man Stood in Front of a Tank, and We Never Found out What Happened to Him...

This photo, which doesn't seem to be particularly well-known, depicts what seems to be a relatively normal afternoon in a town park. People can be seen going about their business in the foreground, without any care or concern. Although men can be seen running towards the front of the picture, the cyclist behind them, adjacent to the roadworker, combined with the fact that there seems to be very few people around make this look like an almost sleepy scene. Cast your eyes to the top right, however, and you'll see why this image is included on this list. A line of huge tanks can be seen rolling in to the area to begin what would be the bloody Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, where the Chinese Government brutally murdered huge numbers of their own people for protesting for Economic and Political Reform in the country. It is unknown how many people officially lost their lives that day, but estimates range from between several hundred to several thousands. Look to the top left of the image, behind the trees, and you can even see the infamous 'tank man', the man who famously stood in front of the line of oncoming tanks, in what would become one of the most famous photos ever taken.
