In the late 1800s, a Scottish businessman who had never even visited the Sahara Desert came up with a plan to flood it. He wanted to dig a canal from the Atlantic Ocean and create a giant inland sea right in the middle of the desert. He was wrong about the elevation and could not get the money. The project died. But the idea did not go away. The French tried something similar in Tunisia. Egypt later considered using atomic bombs to dig a canal. There were also plans to dam the North Sea and turn it into a freshwater lake, and to dam the Congo River to create giant inland seas in Africa. None of these projects were ever built. But some of them might still be possible. This is the strange story of the seas that never were.
