Last Photo Taken Before Deadly Decent...

On 22 May 1998 Francys Arsentiev became the first American woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest without the aid of bottled oxygen. Here she is posing triumphantly at the summit. However, that would be the last photo of her alive. During her descent she became separated from her husband Sergei and succumbed to frostbite and oxygen deprivation. Before she died Francys was encountered by other climbers on the way to the summit, they tried to help her but her condition was too grave and they were forced to abandon her. Her husband also went back to try and save his wife, but he too died during the attempt. Francys died lying on her side, still clipped to a guide rope. Her frozen corpse was nicknamed "Sleeping Beauty" and for nine years Francys lay visible to other climbers. However in 2007 one of the party who had to leave Francys returned to her body to drape it in the U.S flag and move her out of view.
