Monica Seles was born in the former Yugoslavia and began to play tennis at the age of five. She turned professional at the age of just 14 and finished her first full-time tour ranked no. 6 in the world. From 1991 to 92 she dominated women's tennis and became the youngest woman ever to win the French Open by beating Steffi Graff in the final.

The problem was, Steffi had an obsessive German superfan named Günter Parche who was not happy that his idol had lost her no. 1 spot. In April 1993, during a quarterfinal match Monica was playing against Magdalena Maleeva in Hamburg, Germany. During a changeover, Monica was sitting at courtside when Parche ran out of the centre of the crowd to the edge of the court. He leaned over the fence and stabbed Monica between the shoulder blades with a boning knife.

Monica was quickly taken to hospital with a one-and-a-half-inch wound in her back. Parche was arrested and found to be mentally unbalanced. He said he only wanted to hurt Monica, not kill her but admitted wanting to injure her badly enough so that she couldn't play, and Steffi could become no. 1 again.

In a controversial move a German court gave him a two-year suspended sentence for grievous bodily harm. Monica was angered by the leniency of the ruling and prosecutors were able to win the right for a re-trial, but the suspended sentence was upheld.

Monica did lose her ranking because she did not play professionally for another two years and was left with deep emotional trauma because of the attack.
