20 Oceans WITHIN Oceans - Hypersaline Basins

Deep below the open sea there are isolated pools of water known as hypersaline basins. These features form when ancient salt deposits dissolve and create dense brine that settles into self-contained pockets. Each basin has its own chemistry and its own physical boundaries. The water inside is so dense that it does not mix with the surrounding sea. Some basins have unique microbial communities that survive in conditions that would be lethal to most life. Scientists study these sites to understand extreme environments on Earth and to explore how life might survive in similar settings on other worlds.
