Dark5 presents a Top5 list of forbidden places around the world that are off limits to outsiders and may never be touched by you in your lifetime...
The Forbidden Island
Niihau is a privately owned, 70 mile long island in the state of Hawaii, the westernmost island in the chain. It is only accessible by private plane and with express permission, and is often referred to as Hawaii’s “Forbidden Island”.
Snake Island
Ilha da Queimada Grande is a remote island 90 miles off the coast of Brazil, uninhabited by humans for one glaring reason: it is infested with golden lancehead vipers, one of the deadliest snakes in the world, leading to its nickname: Snake Island.
North Sentinel Island
In the Bay of Bengal, surrounded by coral reefs and nestled into a chain of larger islands sits North Sentinel Island: a strip of land no larger than Manhattan that has remained a mystery to the world for the 60,000 years it has been inhabited. The native population of North Sentinel Island, commonly known as the Sentinelese, has never allowed intruders onto is shores.
Mount Athos
Everyday, over 100 people of the Russian Orthodox faith take the long, winding climb up Mount Athos: a 130 square mile peninsula in northeastern Greece that has been a home to several orthodox monasteries for over 1000 years. But it is also home to an old world tradition that is still strictly enforced: no women are allowed on Mount Athos.
The Forbidden Mountain
Deep in the Himalayas lies Gangkhar Puensum, the tallest mountain in Bhutan, and perhaps the tallest never scaled by humankind. It’s jagged, foreboding appearance has made it a magnet for local myth and folklore, and many believe it is home to spirits. Gangkhar Puensum, a name meaning White Peak of the Three Spiritual Brothers, was first measured and mapped in 1922…
...before that date there were disputes over the exact location of the mountain, as it seemed to move or even disappear at random.
