The last man to walk on the moon, Eugene Cernan, stares at the camera with glossy eyes from within his spacecraft. The Apollo 17 astronaut’s space-suit and the helmet to his right are filth. His face is black.

But what appears at first glance to be benign dirt betrays a dark secret. The astronaut in this photograph is contaminated with radioactive particles that may induce genetic mutations or even cell death. He is contaminated with Moon Dust.
