After 20 years of sub-par UFO research, the US Air Force finally agreed to hand over the responsibility for investigating UFOs to the scientific community. The result was the controversial Condon Report, which advised against the continued study of the UFO phenomenon, and struck a death blow to the fledgling field of ufology.
