One of Mount Everest's Most Enduring Mysteries...

In May 1953 Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have summited Everest. But were they actually the first? Or were they beaten to it almost 30 years earlier by the 1924 expedition headed by the ill fated George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. It was billed as third time lucky for Mallory and Irvine after two failed attempts. However unlike previous attempts this time they had oxygen. They were last sighted alive and well on 8 June 1924 after which a storm set it, but they never made it back to base camp. It would be 75 years later that Mallory's perfectly preserved body was located on the
north face of the mountain. The only clue that he may have reached the summit was the fact that no photograph of his wife was found on his body. He had vowed he would leave it on the summit when he reached it. However it's Irvine that holds the key as he had the camera and his body remains missing. Until he or his camera are found the enduring question of who really reached the summit first remains a mystery.
