This Sunken City is INSANE...

Like Atlantis, the city of Thonis Heracleion was the stuff of legends; it had appeared in a few rare inscriptions and ancient texts, but there was no actual proof of its existence. That was, until 2000 when underwater archaeologist Frank Goddio was searching the vast area of the Abu Qir Bay off the coast of Egypt when he and his team saw a colossal face emerge from the watery shadows. Goddio had finally found Thonis-Heracleion, a completely submerged city 6.5 kilometres off Alexandria's coast.

The incredible discovery unearthed 64 ships, 700 anchors, a treasure trove of gold coins and statues and most notably, the remains of a vast temple to the god Amun-Gereb, along with the tiny sarcophagi for the animals that were brought there as offerings. The site is remarkably well preserved and gives a haunting insight into life over 2300 years ago. This once grand city's history is largely unknown and no one is quite sure how it ended up completely submerged under water.
