Unit 731 was a covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army. Both before and during World War II, Unit 731 carried out some of the most grotesque human experiments in history, in their efforts to master germ warfare and test the limits of human endurance. The experiments were performed on captured Chinese civilians and ranged from intentional frostbite and vivisection on conscious patients - to weapons testing on live prisoners and rape.

In this shocking image taken in 1940 a prisoner can be seen being tortured during a bacteriological trial.
