The Terrifying Howden Moor Incident: What The HELL Did Locals Witness That Night?

In March 1997 just after 10pm the Ecclesfield police station was inundated with emergency calls. People from the isolated village of Bolsterstone high up on the moors between Sheffield, England and the Peak National Park were ringing in to report a crashed airplane. Two farmers rang first, who saw the plane flying low and come down in a 'flash', others reported an explosion and a 'strange orange glow' on the western horizon.

Around 40 police, Fire and Rescue and Ambulance services were put on alert. By 11pm the police and RAF helicopters reached the site but could find nothing on thermal imaging. Although a sonic boom was reported as coming from the area at the time of the reported crash.

By early morning, 141 mountain rescue volunteers were up on the moor searching the dangerous terrain, on foot, along with police officers and dog teams. But the crash could have occurred anywhere in the 50 square mile radius of wild and hostile terrain. Reports of the sighting kept coming in from reliable witnesses including a special constable, but still no wreckage was found. With no reports of unreturned flights from anywhere in the area the search was scaled back. No explanation for the event has ever been found.
