In the early 1800s, maritime voyages of discovery ventured into the complete unknown, and sailing out to sea was often a deadly occupation and for English seaman John Hartnell it resulted in his death. Hartnell took part in Sir John Franklin's Northwest Passage expedition and was one of its first casualties, dying of suspected zinc deficiency and malnourishment in the first year of the voyage. He was afforded a proper burial in the Arctic permafrost on Beechey Island in Canada along with some of his crewmates. Many years later in 1984 a scientific expedition exhumed Hartnells remains from his icy grave and found him remarkably well preserved. However, the twisted expression on Hartnell's face makes for a haunting frozen in time image.
