This Disturbing Ancient Chinese Practice Will Scare You to The Bone...

No one is sure when the practise of "lotus feet", made by the process of extreme foot binding began. But this cruel, disfiguring and harmful procedure was considered the very definition of beauty in Ancient China from round about the 10th century. Done for the benefit of men who found lotus feet to be particularly erotic, small feet were seen as a status symbol. Men believed that because of the foot binding, women could only take little steps. This difficulty in walking supposedly meant that women had to use the muscles of their inner thighs, hips and pelvic area more and consequently their pelvic floor and vagina tightened making sex more pleasurable. Tragically the procedure began around the ages of four to nine, with the girls being told that it was the only way for them to be desirable and make a good marriage. The agonising process took as long as two years, the toes were bent underneath and pressed into the sole of the foot, with the toes and the arch of the foot being forcibly broken and then bound tightly. The feet were then unwrapped and rebound tighter each time. Lotus feet were not banned in China until the mid-20th century.
This mind-blowing photograph was taken around the time of WWI and shows the feet of a Chinese woman when compared to a teacup and an average size American woman's shoe.
