In 1647, labourers working on a cathedral in Venzone, Italy, dug up a tomb and found the preserved remains of a man inside. His corpse had withered to just 33 pounds, and his skin was like paper, but remarkably, he hadn't decomposed. Over the years, more bodies similar to the man were found and locals and experts were baffled about how these bodies had naturally mummified. For decades it was believed that a unique fungus was responsible, however modern theories suggest that the soil and water conditions in the area are the explanation, although to date no one really knows why the mummies of Venzone remain intact.
