Scientists Say the Amazon Is Shifting to an Ancient Climate

The Amazon rainforest is entering a climate state scientists say has no modern equivalent. After more than 30 years of data, researchers warn the region is shifting toward a new “hypertropical” condition — with longer droughts, hotter temperatures, and extreme stress on trees. These changes haven’t existed on Earth for millions of years.

As droughts intensify, the Amazon’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide is weakening, raising concerns that parts of the forest could shift from being a carbon sink to a carbon source. Similar transformations may also emerge in Africa and Asia within the next century. This isn’t just a regional shift — it could reshape the global climate balance.
