Did You Know This Crazy Story About The Empire State Building?

In 1945, Betty Lou Oliver was working as an elevator operator at the Empire State Building in New York. On July 28 of that year, a B-25 bomber pilot made a wrong turn in the fog and crashed into the seventy-ninth floor of the building causing a fire. Poor Betty suffered severe burns. However, if that wasn't bad enough, to rescue her, paramedics put her in an elevator to descend 75 stories down to safety….Halfway down, the elevator cables snapped, and her car hurtled towards the basement floor.

Miraculously Betty survived only because the snapped cables fell below the elevator creating a cushioned landing that softened the drop. As of 2018, Betty still holds the Guinness World Record for the longest elevator fall ever survived.
