The Feral Child...

This next photo shows the tragic consequences of neglecting a child's needs, the little girl is Genie Wiley pictured in 1970. Genie not her real name is 13 years old but barely able to walk, she became known as the feral child and her story is heartbreaking. When Genie hobbled into a Los Angeles county welfare office in October 1970, the welfare officers at first thought she was autistic, but they later discovered that the little girl had suffered such abuse and neglect that she couldn't, talk or eat properly, she was incontinent and was unable to fully focus her eyes or extend her limbs and she weighed just 59lb. Her condition was the result of years of abuse by her deranged father who since she was a toddler had kept her strapped into a handmade straitjacket and tied her to a chair in a room in his suburban house. He had forbidden her to cry, speak or make noise and had beaten and growled at her, like a dog. After her rescue, Genie, became something of a science experiment, passed through the care system. Her whereabouts today is unknown although it is believed she is still alive.
