When four University of Idaho students were horrifically stabbed and slashed to death in their off-campus house on King Road, Bryan Kohberger’s name wasn’t one many people expected to hear when police announced him as their suspect. But that’s not because Bryan was an upstanding member of society or, conversely, a violent career criminal already known to police. No, people weren’t expecting to hear Bryan’s name because they weren’t expecting to hear any name: the small town of Moscow, Idaho hadn’t had a murder in years, and in the wake of this quadruple homicide, police had been hesitant to release much information pertaining to their search for the killer. This led the victims’ families, university students, and the surrounding communities to worry that the case had already gone cold, bungled by a police department who hadn’t been up to the task. So when investigators announced that they’d arrested Washington State University PhD student Bryan Kohberger in connection with the murders of 21-year-old Kaylee Goncalves, 21-year-old Madison Mogen, 20-year-old Xana Kernodle, and 20-year-old Ethan Chapin, it was met with a sense of hope that justice would be done, and anger at the senselessness of four young lives stolen...but then there were those who already knew Bryan Kohberger, the students and faculty he’d interacted with throughout his academic career. For many of them, the idea of Bryan causing this level of devastation wasn’t much of a surprise; in fact, they’d been sounding the alarm for some time. Welcome back to the Lore Lodge.
