On August 16th, 1942, Lieutenant Ernest DeWitt Cody, 27 and Ensign Charles Ellis Adams, 34 were U.S. Navy pilots who vanished while flying a blimp, known as L-8, on its regular patrol over California. When it later descended and crashed to earth, there was no one on board and no trace was ever found of the men.
