Take a look at this island. Today, it's just a remote patch of land in the middle of a river in Siberia. But in 1933, thousands of people were transported here by the Soviet government. Many of them had committed no serious crime. Some had simply been picked up for not having the correct documents. What followed would be so horrifying that Soviet officials themselves would struggle to explain how it was allowed to happen.
