We like to think of universities as safe, but as with any place where large numbers of people gather, this isn’t always the case - and Penn State, my alma mater, is no exception. Some of those stories are famous, and others little known. The yet unsolved murder of Betsy Aardsma may very well be the best known unsolved homicide story in the state, having taken place inside the disquieting Pattee Stacks section of the school’s library. More recently, the bizarre death of sophomore Justine Gross was ruled an accident just three years ago, despite considerable circumstantial evidence pointing towards foul play or at the very least criminal negligence. Within hours of her disappearance, police had a suspect, a confession, and video evidence, only for the DA to decide not to pursue charges. The question is, was it a lack of competence, or is something more sinister at play, as Centre County continues to withhold information from the media, the students, and most importantly, Justine’s family?
