In November 1896, Civil War veteran and journalist Colonel Henry Glenville Shaw claimed he encountered three strange beings near Lodi, California. Nearly seven feet tall, slender, and carrying luminous objects, the creatures examined Shaw and his companion before boarding a cigar-shaped airship hovering above a canal. Was this one of the earliest recorded Close Encounters in American history — or something else entirely?
